We have two new Senior Moderators

Wednesday, July 4th, 2007

I didn’t mention this on the site before, but a while back “Eniotna” and “Reyna” took the step up from being moderators to Senior Moderators. This promotion means that they have more authority on the forums, they can for example ban users from accessing Soulreaper.net if that now would be needed.

In any case; keep up the good work guys! You are a big part of the site being such a friendly place! :)

2 GigaByte of free storage and backup

Tuesday, June 12th, 2007

If you haven’t checked out Diino yet, it is a service where you get an initial 2 GigaByte (2048 MB) of free storage. (For a small fee you an increase the space for your files)

With Diino you can both backup and keep your files available for all the computers you use, but also share files with your friends in a similar way to RapidShare and MegaUpload, just better and faster (and for no cost whatsoever).

When you use the special client from Diino, your transfers will be secured with 2048 bit encryption which ensures that no-one will spy on your data.

If you want to take part of the offer above, use this link.

Happy Storing! :)

Wordpress.org hacked - update your blogs!

Saturday, March 3rd, 2007

This is usually not a topic being written about on this blog, but it is important enough to be mentioned:

During the release of wordpress 2.1.1. some part(s) of the wordpress infrastructure got infiltrated by a cracker. The cracker then included malicious code into the wordpress codebase.

What this means is this: If you run Wordpress 2.1.1 you must upgrade to Wordpress 2.1.2, otherwise your hosting-account might be in jeopardy!!!

Read more about the unfortunate event at Wordpress.org.

(Needless to say, this blog is already updated)

Help us out and get yourself some hosting for your site in the process!

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

Hello,

As I mentioned previously we need to invest in new hardware in order to keep the site running as fast as you expect it and such investments don’t come cheap. We also need to pay for the software license for vBulletin, the forum-engine of our choice.

The whip: What we ask is that you, if you are able and willing, donate an amount of your choice (see button in the bottom of this blog post).

The carrot: If you choose to donate an amount exceeding 20 Euro (or the equivalent in any other currency) you’ll get 1 GigaByte of ad-free web and email-hosting (MySQL database support included) with FTP-support for a period of 12 months on your asking. You can either host your own domain name or use a subdomain of soulreaper.net.

Contact us with your donation-details to have your webhosting account enabled or if you want to know of alternative methods of helping us.

If you need help with registering your own domain name or installing software (such as wordpress for blogs), we’ll help you with this too - aka; support included!

Extra benefits: As a donor you’ll also be included in our coming VIP-membership option, where you can select multiple site-layouts and there will be no ads displayed using these alternative layouts. With the VIP-membership you’ll also have your inbox-quota increased to 65535 messages, which is basically “no storage quota”.

If this sounds interesting to you, do not hesitate to use the donation-button below and support the site. Remember that no amount is too small! :)

Server-move complete and tested

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

The main site has now moved to a new server with a new Internet Service Provider, which is located at another physical location than the previous ISP.

This move took place around new years eve, but I decided to not post anything regarding the server-migration until it was complete and the new setup was deemed stable, which it is now.

The good aspect of the move is that we now are located on a more robust network with multiple and redundant Gigabit-connections to the Internet.

A description of the network looks something like this:

Internal Network

  • Redundant carrier class Juniper routers
  • Redundant Cisco 6509 (SUP720) distribution switches
  • Cisco 2950/2960 series aggregation/customer layer switches
  • 100% fiber internal backbone
  • 100% network uptime SLA

Backbone Carriers

  • Level(3) - Direct 2x GigE (2000mbit/sec)
  • Savvis - Direct GigE (1000mbit/sec)
  • AT&T - Direct GigE (1000mbit/sec)
  • nLayer - Direct 2x GigE (2000mbit/sec)
  • PCCW Global - Direct 3x GigE (3000mbit/sec)
  • TeliaSonera - Direct 3x GigE (3000mbit/sec)
  • Peering - Direct GigE (1000mbit/sec)

In other words: Good shit!

A negative aspect of the move is that after mentioned move we have seen an increase in traffic, which in it’s turn means that we need to invest in more hardware in order to be able to serve you the pages and material as fast as they should be served to you.

There will be more posted regarding how you can help out the site. As we believe in organic growth, anyone who decides to help will get something in return; you could call it a win-win situation.

Anywho, I hope that you’ll enjoy this new server and the increased stability and network-speed.

Downtime this saturday evening / night. *resolved*

Saturday, November 18th, 2006

The site may be un-available during saturday evening/night starting from 21.00 (gmt+1) due to database maintenance, software-updating and the adding of a new feature.

I’m sending out an email about this now. The chat will be available through-out this time.

Edit: The update seem to have went fine! You should also take a peek at the new “add to”-service that was installed tonight. Now you can add your own or others’ threads to services such as digg and del.icio.us. (see screenshot below)

What the administrator&the staff behind the site do - here’s the brutal truth

Saturday, November 18th, 2006

So, I’ve been getting quite a few questions on what I and the whole team behind the site are doing and now I’m seizing the opportunity to tell you about what happens behind the scenes of Soulreaper.net! ;)

First off I’m sorry to say that you are becoming disappointed now, as there are no juicy behind the scenes activities. The moderator-team does have some discussions on matters regarding the site, but these are mostly about site-improvements, criticism (positive/negative) and purely technical matters.

The moderators’ job is to keep the site clean and move/close topics and posts as the moderators see appropriate. The first level moderators’ job is also to notify the senior moderator / administrator about users (read: spambots) that needs to be banned, and then, if necessary, the IP-addresses will be denied access to the site by the administrator. I also disable usernames that I know are spambots of different kinds, as there are ways to detect this before they even cause any damage.

What the administrator also does, beside keeping this site clean from vermin is to do all the coding necessary to add new features and keeping the server ticking as it should.

Another important aspect to this site is that we have certain methodologies in place which protects all members against spam coming through the site (including private messages) as well as protecting the members’ personal information to always be safe and not leave the realms of this site. The later includes IP and email-addresses.

I hope that this post explained quite a few things regarding the daily upkeep of all our’s Soulreaper.net.

Cheerio!

Fileserver move

Wednesday, November 15th, 2006

This is a short note to tell you that I have moved the fileserver from one place to another. If there are any problems with the hosted files, then please let me know either here on the blog or at the forum.

Thanks :)

Welcome our new moderator; Reyna

I’m happy to say that “Reyna” now is a member of the team behind Soulreaper.net! :) She’ll be helping out with moderating posts and keeping our site clean and healthy!
